Pay special attention next time you watch a movie or a television show to all the scenes that take place on a street during the night. In almost every case, the street will be wet, even if it’s not raining. Is this done on purpose, or is it simply a coincidence that the streets are almost always wet? Wetting the streets is a technique that has been utilized for years. Filmmakers wet the streets intentionally for night shots in order to assist the cinematographer. Shooting at night poses a significant challenge for filmmakers, as they must have the right amount of lighting to properly expose the film, while at the same time making the entire scene look natural. Wetting the streets makes the surface more reflective, which makes it easier to light the scene and expose the film. So, whenever you’re out with a group watching a movie and one of your friends asks, “Hey, why are the streets always wet on the night shots?” you can amaze him or her with your in-depth knowledge of production techniques.
