wade-sand-gravel-co-incThe motivation behind the decision to transition to Red Fox Media came from two sources: First, much of the content we produce is for a client’s website. Since online video is becoming more pervasive and mainstream, more and more clients want to produce a video for their website. So, we believe that expanding our services to include website design and development is a natural move for us. Second, there have been many instances when I have been in a meeting with a client and they have asked if I provide website design services in addition to video. I have been able to pick up a handful of web design projects from these inquiries.

Although the Red Fox brand hasn’t officially launched, we have already built up a good portfolio of web projects. Most recently we soft-launched a website for Wade Sand and Gravel, a company that operates a quarry in Birmingham, Alabama and provides crushed stone to aggregate customers. They approached us because they have never had an Internet presence and were looking to create a practical, informative website for potential customers coming into the Birmingham market for construction projects.

Wade Sand and Gravel owns and operates three companies - Wade Sand and Gravel, Superior Products, and Red Bluff Sand and Gravel. We soft-launched the Wade site to meet with the client’s important bid deadline, with the plan of launching a complete package of Wade company websites at a later date. Eventually, Superior Products and Red Bluff will have their own designated sites, with a landing page that provides links to all three companies.

Any entrepreneur will tell you that adaptation is an integral part of a successful business. Companies have to study the marketplace. They have to watch and listen, and be willing to evolve as technologies, trends, opinions, and public tastes change.

2010 marks Parc Entertainment’s seventh year in business, and during that time we have been able to work with a variety of clients on some great projects. To date, we have branded ourselves as a video production and post-production facility. But we realize that today’s media is more integrated than it was just a few years ago. And web designers are often asked about video production. They each go hand-in-hand.

As marketing content becomes increasingly connected, we realize that clients need compelling and visually stunning content. They need a production facility that can engage, inspire, and entertain an audience. That’s where we come in. In an effort to give our clients what they are looking for, Parc Entertainment will soon be Red Fox Media. In addition to our video production and post-production services, we now offer full website design, development, and SEO for our clients. Parc Entertainment is now in a new location in the heart of Five Points South. Our new address is 1312 20th Street South, Birmingham, AL 35205. We occupy the second floor of an old white Victorian house that backs up to Cobb Lane. Email addresses, phone and fax numbers remain the same. budget-cutsMoney, money, money. This is the one thing that most potential clients are concerned about when deciding whether or not to push forward with a marketing campaign. If you work in video production, web design, graphic design… well, just about any creative field, it can be frustrating when clients want more for less money. Somewhere along the way the true value of what we provide hasn’t been communicated. Maybe the fault lies not with the client, but with ourselves.

Let me explain. In a post last year I discussed the importance of knowing what you’re worth. As a freelancer and small business owner you need to be confident in the quality of your work and the value of your time. Your rates should reflect this view. However, during leaner times we sometimes find ourselves desperate to land the next job. And what do we do? We “low-ball” our bids in an effort to beat out our competitors. Over time, this approach has two effects.

  • The marketplace is cheapened.
  • The bar is lowered for everyone, creating a new price standard by which all other creative services are gauged.

Before you bid on a job, you have to decide what your ultimate goal is. If you simply want the job, so you can get something on your reel or in your portfolio, then you will probably try to undercut the competition. Keep in mind that if you cut your rates just to land the job, the client will expect more of the same from you down the road. They will continue to up the work load while trying to talk you down on price.

The alternative strategy is to let the quality of your work speak for itself. Communicate the value of what you will deliver. Tell your client that you want to provide them with the most competitive product, not a quick fix. Reinforce the idea that compromises both financial and creatively will ultimately compromise the end product. And if the client continues to balk at your bid, don’t be afraid to walk away. If the client’s entire focus is on money, then the relationship might not be a good fit for you.
